Hayman Island

Located in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Hayman island, the last time I was there was about 15 years ago – it was amazing then, and I was happy to find it’s just as amazing now. After an $80 million renovation by the One & Only luxury resort chain, the noticeable changes were the bigger rooms (and a new beachy relaxed décor), the gym, the boutique (with lots of Camilla for my liking), and the brand new Aquazure Pool with Tappa’s restaurant.

Our swim out suite (photos below) was located in the Pool Wing with direct access to the original Hayman Pool. Very relaxing since you hardly need to leave the room, except to swim over to the bar for a coconut to drink or club sandwich for lunch. The suites have tinted windows so privacy was ensured during the day, however make sure the curtains are shut at night! Majority of the guests were inhabiting the chic new cabanas at the Aquazure Pool on the other side of the resort. With occupancy being at just 30%, id say this is a good time of year to visit, we enjoyed almost complete seclusion at the Hayman Pool.

Even though the resort is totally isolated, it wasn’t boring. There’s lots to do here. Snorkelling, diving, bush walking, sand flat tours during low tide, jet skiing, paddle boarding, fishing, private charters, etc, but my FAVOURITE activity of all time was the helicopter experience to Whitehaven Beach. The breathtaking aerial views of the reefs, the white sand & the turquoise, blue and green water was magical & very romantic. We touched down to a picnic blanket, umbrella & a bottle of champagne, sharing the seven kilometre beach with just one other helicopter. The highlight of my trip.

The restaurants mostly have small menu’s, and small servings, so looking at the positives, there was no weight gain from this holiday! Overall, in my opinion, this would be among the top five best resorts in Australia. Probably the best island beach resort. We contemplated the Maldives, Thailand or Bora Bora for a tropical holiday, but I’m so glad I saved myself the jet lag, this was of the same standard as any other world class resort I have visited.

Thanks to our butler and the other Hayman staff who made our stay dreamy!
